Q & A with Alyssia Eunike Soetedjo
My mother was my first piano teacher when I was four. She would show me simple rhythms and melodies on the piano. She would also play Disney songs I could dance to while she played. I began studying piano more formally at age five. I started with classical music but as I got a little older I started exploring other styles like R&B and Pop.
Where did you go to music school? What did you study there?
I graduated from Berklee College of Music with a dual major in Contemporary Writing and Production & Film Scoring. While at Berklee I studied Tonal Harmony, Ear Training, Arranging, Mixing and Editing, Conducting, Studio Production, Scoring for Film and Advertisement & Composition for Orchestra and Big Band.
What are your favorite kinds of music to play and why?
I love playing around with different music styles for different productions. As a film composer I write for multiple instruments. As a singer-songwriter I love recording and performing music that tells the listener a story. I believe good music is honest and communicates between people.
What are some of the musical styles you teach?
As a Berklee graduate I can teach any style of music. Most of my students are studying pop, rock, theatre musicals, jazz and classical music.
Where are some of the places you've performed?
In Indonesia I was fortunate to be the representative of my music school in Jakarta and I performed at many events. As a pianist and singer in the U.S, I’ve performed at the Berklee Performance Center, Copley Square, the Somersworth Indonesian Festival and other venues throughout Boston and the Northeast.
Who are some of your favorite bands and musicians?
I love David Foster, Harry Connick Jr, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, Honne, Tom Misch, any Disney soundtracks, Alicia Keys, Musiq Soulchild, Emily King and many more...
What are your other musical pursuits and accomplishments?
Recently I collaborated as a songwriter, singer, pianist and co-producer with Roxanne Seeman and Jeff Bova to create an international release. As a film composer I've been privileged to collaborate with various musicians and filmmakers from around Boston. I’ve recorded a catalog of original songs and videos. I've also taught music at my church for the kids in Sunday school.
What are some of your artistic goals?
My long-term career goals are to continue creating music as a songwriter, producer and film composer.
Tell us about your sound clips:
1) "By My Side" is the first song I wrote and produced in collaboration with two other Berklee students. It was inspired by my friend who was having a long distance relationship. 2) "Hey There" was the first recording that I wrote, arranged, performed and produced by myself. 3) "Lies" is a song from late last year. I had never collaborated with a rapper before (which you can hear on the full-length version) or created an Electronic Pop song. Writing and recording this track was a really fun experience.
